It seems that the edit pencil has simply disappeared. This is sad, since I was really warming up to Blogger. Hopefully, this is a short-term glitch that Blogger will fix. I hoped that it might be the result of using Live Writer, am not using it now. I even tried refreshing the screen, which had worked before, but nothing works.
